We Teach Music

At Mrs. Kt's Piano, we make piano lessons fun.

Hi, my name is Kattie Loftis.  I'm good at meeting students where they're at and helping them become the kind of pianist they would like to be.  Rather than cramming a forced curriculum that doesn't match their desires for learning, I work with the student to develop a personalized learning plan that sets the student on the path to success in learning piano!

I absolutely love working with children and adults alike that want to take music lessons so they can grow in music and touch the world with it. When teacher and student work together to bring music to life through piano lessons, it is a beautiful experience.

"Enriching your world and other's through music."

Are Piano Lessons Right for Me?

Some students know that they want to learn piano. They’re searching for music lessons in Midland Texas and look us up. We schedule their first lesson and before you know it, they’re playing Scott Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag and sounding amazing at the same time.

Other students that we have taught don’t always know how much they’re going to love learning the piano. Many times these music students are kids of parents who want their child to learn music for any number of reasons:

  1. As a creative outlet to learn that music is a life-changing way of self-expression
  2. Because the parent(s) play the piano as well but don’t know how to teach their kids
  3. Or, the child has expressed interest in music, and because piano is such a clear, visual picture for learning music theory, they decide to start with piano to open the doors to easily learning any musical instrument as their kids grow.

Other times, these students are adults that have never learned a musical instrument in their lifetime and really just get a hunger to learn. We love these students as well because they’re ability to learn is incredible. Many times they carry a rich new passion for music that you don’t see in other students.

As if those reasons aren't enough, there are many well documented scientific, academic, and biological reasons to learn to play music. Here are just a few...

1. Increased IQ and gray matter in the brain

2. Increased social understanding & verbal memory

3. Increased immune function & lower stress hormones

Here's a short video with a few more details, and a website with documented studies. Here's the associated website address: https://pianopower.org/16-benefits-of-playing-an-instrument/

You’ll realize how much you want to learn when you step in our doors and begin learning. It’s a wonderful journey of constant learning, we are here to help you along the way and make you the best you can be as efficiently as possible.

PIANO LESSONS

There are several aspects to playing the piano that Miss Kattie is looking forward to exploring with you. Here are a few of the basic fundamentals you will learn during your piano lessons:

  • Getting to know the keyboard and notes
  • Learning everything about the beat and rhythm
  • Finger placement and correct technique
  • Reading music
  • Motivational tips for when practicing becomes a challenge

MUSIC THEORY

Learning and understanding music theory is important because it helps students understand how the music is written which will then help them to interpret the musical notes. Each notation, key, scale, etc. holds significant importance for how the song is played. Understanding theory helps students improvise, cover mistakes, and write their own songs. In addition to the basics in piano lessons, Mrs. Kt will be focusing on these skills in your piano lessons:

  • Learning sharp and flat scales around the circle of 5ths
  • Exploring major and minor key signatures
  • Practicing key-relevant chords, cadences & arpeggios
  • Learning the musical function of tones in a scale
  • Applying this knowledge to basic improvising & music creation

EAR TRAINING

Ear training allows the musician to identify notes just by hearing them. Ear training consists of studying pitches, intervals, chords, scales and modes, chord progressions and cadences and rhythm. If you are unsure what these elements are, then you are in the right place because Miss Kattie will go over all of that with you! This skill has a lot of great benefits for the student and their musical journey. Some of the benefits of ear training are:

  • Improvement in improvisation skills
  • Interval recognition
  • Improvement in rhythmic skills
  • Overall improvement in musicality
